Our Name

The namesake of the Shevchenko Foundation is Ukraine’s nineteenth-century national poet and artist Taras Shevchenko. Despite living most of his life in exile outside Ukraine, Shevchenko’s prophetic writings portrayed the struggle of a nation for its right to exist. His impact on modern Ukrainian literature is immense and his artistic legacy continues to inspire the Ukrainian people around the world to celebrate and cherish their Ukrainian identity.

The Shevchenko Foundation, created with proceeds from the erection of a monument in his name on the grounds of the Manitoba legislature, works to preserve, develop, and promote the Ukrainian cultural legacy in Canada in all its beauty and diversity for all to embrace.
