Toronto, ON – Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine gathered at the Art Gallery of Ontario on May 9 for the Tryzub Awards Gala in a show of solidarity with the people of Ukraine. The 2024 Gala, dedicated to the Crimean Tatar people on the 10th anniversary of Russia’s illegal occupation of Crimea, honoured two recipients that have made notable contributions to Ukraine’s resilience, ultimate victory and rebuilding.

Horizon Capital Founding Partner and CEO Lenna Koszarny was recognized with the Leadership Award for her dedication to Ukraine’s economic development. Horizon Capital has attracted significant investment to Ukraine, raising $800 million in six years. This includes $350 million for the first and largest fund since the full-fledged invasion which backs visionary Ukrainian entrepreneurs with capital now, not when the war is over.

A promoter of Ukraine’s investment climate, Koszarny has been recognized by the business community for her achievements. In May 2023, Koszarny was named by Forbes Ukraine as one of the “Top 50 Women Leaders Leading Ukraine to Victory” and featured on the cover of its April-May 2024 issue.

In her acceptance speech, Lenna Koszarny focused attention on the importance of Ukraine to the global economy including food security. From agriculture to mineral resources to technology, Ukraine is a leader in both export and innovation. She underscored the need to promote Ukraine at every opportunity to ensure the world stays engaged until victory and into the future.

The Friend of Ukraine Award was presented to the humanitarian aid organization GlobalMedic. Accepting the award on behalf of the organization, its founder Rahul Singh presented the work of the organization which has been at the forefront of the war against Ukraine since March 2022.

Addressing critical needs, GlobalMedic travels Ukraine providing essential items such as medical supplies and emergency kits equipped with ceramic filtration systems for clean water. It supports local economies with programs such as the hot meal program in Odesa. GlobalMedic has also assisted many Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons fleeing their homes with very little.

Singh painted a picture of the devastating toll of the war on the civilian population. Although some have fled, most have been unable to or have not wanted to do so for many reasons. The presence of organizations such as GlobalMedic offers people hope in a time of dire need and Singh was grateful for the partnerships developed with the Ukrainian community, specifically the Canada Ukraine Foundation, that enable them to continue their efforts. In his remarks, Rahul Singh also acknowledged the unwavering commitment of Ukrainians in Canada and the diaspora to helping the people of Ukraine survive, win, and rebuild.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Shevchenko Foundation president Boris Balan who highlighted the role of the diaspora in maintaining support for the people of Ukraine on many fronts including the cultural one which remains under fierce attack as the enemy tries to eradicate the Ukrainian identity.

The Shevchenko Foundation expresses gratitude to Rayla and George Myhal of the Myhal Family Foundation for their vision and partnership in organizing this gala evening in recognition of community leaders and friends of Ukraine. A special thank you to Event Chair Rayla Myhal for her leadership and commitment.

Rayla Myhal concluded the event with a heartfelt thank you to the recipients, sponsors, guests, and volunteers for their contribution to the evening’s success.

A live auction featured one-of-a-kind collector’s items, among them a Ukrainian flag signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A silent auction showcased many items produced in Ukraine, some by veterans incorporating symbols of the genocidal war.

Guests enjoyed entertainment by multi-award-winning, Platinum-selling artist Matt Dusk.

Glory to Ukraine! Slava Ukraїni!
