As a centre of Ukrainian settlement in northeastern Alberta, the Vegreville community was eager to host a Ukrainian festival to share some of the finest aspects of Ukrainian cultural heritage with its community.
The Vegreville Cultural Association was organized and incorporated on November 15, 1973, and the first Vegreville Ukrainian Festival was held on June 28- 30, 1974. 30, 1974. Despite lots of rain and many challenges, it was a great success. Organizing an annual event was inevitable.
The Vegreville Pysanka Festival marked its 50th anniversary in 2023 with close to 10,000 festivalgoers. The Festival has proudly observed the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine, the Centenary of Ukrainian immigration in Canada, and celebrated Ukrainian independence. Many more milestones are in its future.
