We are pleased to share with you the 2022 bookmark celebrating the legacy of renowned Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. Designed by Canadian artist Olya Tkachenko, the imagery dramatically reflects the words of the selected poem in which the bard reveals the true power of the words that helped to alleviate his suffering in bondage.
The poem – It’s Not for People, Not for Fame – can describe the challenges of every artist, but it is the self-expression of the one that transforms into the art enjoyed by the many.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we can fuel the creativity in our community, offer opportunities for expression and personal growth, while providing the artist with a captive, adoring audience.
Since we launched the bookmark initiative over 20 years ago, TSF has engaged over 70 Canadian artists and distributed over 600,000 bookmarks throughout Canada to children and youth, avid readers and art lovers alike!
Building on this initiative, we are once again inviting children – our youngest emerging artists – to create a bookmark of their own interpretation.
At TSF we love to celebrate our storytellers! Regardless of how the story is told – through the written word, visual art, theatre or film – it’s the story that shares who we are as a people, our history, present and future, and our contribution to the Canadian landscape. This story takes on even greater significance in the shadows of the horrific war raging in Ukraine that aims to erase all traces of this identity.
