On the fourth Saturday in November, National Holodomor Memorial Day, the global community will unite to remember the victims of the Holodomor.
In 1932-33, Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Communist regime used food as a weapon, orchestrating a famine to prevent Ukrainians from realizing their aspirations for independence. The Holodomor was the culmination of a genocidal assault on the Ukrainian people, causing irreparable harm to the social fabric of Ukraine’s society, its spiritual culture and identity.
As we commemorate the 92nd anniversary of this genocide, we are witnessing yet another attempt to ruthlessly eradicate the Ukrainian people. But history reminds us that Ukrainians are a people resilient and unbowed.
Guided by our principles of truth, democracy, and fundamental human rights, Canadians have an obligation to ensure that the lessons of the Holodomor are never forgotten. Our communities have been blessed with the lives of many survivors of the Holodomor, and we are grateful to them for sharing their stories. May their lives lived inspire a brighter future.
We also unite in recognition of the bravery and resilience of the Ukrainian people today with their heartbreaking yet inspirational stories.
On Saturday, November 22, International and National Holodomor Memorial Day, please join Canadians and the international community in remembrance.
- Light a candle in memory of the victims.
- Pause for a moment of silence at 19:32 (7:32) local time.
- Post photos of your candles on social media with your thoughts of remembrance.
- Join events in your local community.
